EU foreign ministers reject proposal to suspend association agreement with Israel
EU foreign ministers met on Tuesday to discuss potential sanctions against Israel, but ultimately rejected a proposal to suspend the EU-Israel association agreement. Despite criticism from some member states regarding the situation in Gaza and violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, a consensus on sanctions could not be reached. Ireland, Spain, and Slovenia had urged the EU to reconsider a partial suspension of the agreement, citing ceasefire violations, insufficient humanitarian aid, and escalating violence. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas acknowledged the ongoing discussions and the need for member states to shift their positions. Separately, the EU announced plans to impose new sanctions on Iranians involved in restricting free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, with the aim of adopting these measures in May.
