Man charged in White House correspondents’ dinner attack is indicted on new assault count
Cole Tomas Allen, a California man, has been indicted on a new charge of assaulting a federal officer with a deadly weapon in connection with an incident at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner on April 25th. Allen was initially charged with attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump and firearms offenses. The new indictment confirms authorities believe Allen fired a shotgun that struck a Secret Service officer in a bullet-resistant vest during the attack at the Washington Hilton. Allen allegedly ran through a security checkpoint armed with guns and knives. His defense attorneys have questioned the government's theory regarding his intent to kill the president or fire the shot that hit the officer.
