Sherpa missing for a week on Everest found crawling toward base camp after his family begins funeral rites
Sherpa guide Dawa Sherpa, 52, was found alive and crawling toward Everest base camp nearly a week after disappearing during a descent. His family had already begun funeral rites when he was discovered by a cleanup crew in the Khumbu Icefall, surviving without food, water, or supplemental oxygen. Rescuers brought him to safety and he was flown to a Kathmandu hospital for treatment of frostbite and other complications. Dawa went missing around May 29 while guiding a Polish climber, who made it back safely. His survival is being described as a miracle, occurring at the end of a climbing season that saw over 1,000 summits and five reported deaths on Everest.
