At least 19 dead after major earthquake strikes southern Philippines
A magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck the southern Philippines, resulting in at least 19 fatalities. The tremor also generated small tsunami waves that reached Indonesia and Japan. In response, President Marcos ordered the suspension of classes in affected areas, coinciding with the start of the school year. The quake caused temporary power and communication outages in the coastal province of Sarangani. The Philippines is situated on the geologically active "ring of fire," making earthquakes a frequent occurrence. Over 130 aftershocks, some as strong as magnitude 6.7, were recorded following the initial event.
