New York man found guilty of acting as an unregistered agent of China
A New York man, Lu Jianwang, has been found guilty of acting as an unregistered agent of the Chinese government. Prosecutors accused Lu of operating a secret Chinese police station in Manhattan's Chinatown and assisting Beijing in locating a pro-democracy activist in California. A jury in Brooklyn federal court reached the verdict after a weeklong trial. Lu faces up to 30 years in prison for charges including conspiracy and obstruction of justice. The Justice Department has increased scrutiny of such "transnational repression" activities by foreign adversaries. China has denied the allegations, stating the centers are run by volunteers to assist citizens abroad.
