1 person has died after blast at New York City shipyard that also injured 36 people, officials say.
A fire and two explosions occurred Friday at a New York City shipyard, resulting in one civilian death and 36 injuries, primarily among first responders. The incident began around 3:30 p.m. when calls reported smoke and two workers trapped in a metal structure. Firefighting and EMS crews arrived within six minutes, but an explosion shortly after caused initial injuries. A second, more powerful explosion occurred while firefighters searched for the trapped workers, seriously injuring a fire marshal and a firefighter who were inside the structure. The fire marshal sustained critical injuries, while the firefighter was in serious condition. The fire was brought under control Friday night, and an investigation into its cause is pending.
