Police fire plastic bullets in effort to contain race riots in Northern Ireland
Police in Northern Ireland have deployed plastic bullets and received 200 reinforcements from Great Britain to quell race riots that began on Tuesday. Officers have fired 17 plastic projectiles at crowds throwing rocks and petrol bombs. The unrest follows a graphic video of a knife attack in north Belfast, which has led to condemnation of racist thuggery. Twelve officers have been injured and 16 people arrested, with further reports of intimidation against minority ethnic individuals, including healthcare workers. The situation has prompted concerns about the impact on international healthcare worker recruitment.
