Humanitarian crisis deepens as South Sudan violence surges
Renewed fighting between government and opposition forces in South Sudan since late December 2025 has triggered a deepening humanitarian crisis. An estimated 280,000 people have been displaced, primarily in Jonglei state, where over 235,000 have fled. The UN warns that nearly 10 million people across South Sudan need life-saving assistance, with over 450,000 children at risk of acute malnutrition due to displacement and halted medical services. Humanitarian operations are severely hampered by attacks, looting, and restrictions on movement, preventing aid from reaching those in need. The violence exacerbates an already dire situation following the 2013-2018 civil war, which killed nearly 400,000 people and displaced millions.
