Ibrahim, born Adolph Johannes Brand in 1934, was instrumental in defining a genre of South African jazz over an eight-decade career. His compositions, such as the famous 1974 track "Mannenberg," became associated with the struggle against apartheid. He began composing at age seven and performed in various bands, including the Jazz Epistles with Hugh Masakela. Ibrahim, who later changed his name after converting to Islam, was recognized by President Cyril Ramaphosa for creations that honored his political commitment and musical brilliance.
