How Eriksen's heart device kicked into action
Christian Eriksen is recovering at home after collapsing during a football match on Sunday. His implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), a device implanted in his chest, activated as designed, delivering an electrical shock to correct an abnormal heart rhythm. This device, which acts as a mini defibrillator, is a treatment that detects and corrects heart rhythm problems. Eriksen's ICD allowed for a quicker recovery compared to his previous cardiac arrest in 2021, where external defibrillation was required. Cardiac arrests can occur for various reasons, including electrical impulse malfunctions or heart damage, and while rare in young athletes, they can be life-threatening.
