NSW passes controversial new gun and protest laws in wake of Bondi attacks after marathon debate
Following a lengthy debate, the New South Wales government passed an omnibus bill enacting changes to gun laws and granting police increased authority to prohibit street protests for up to three months. The legislation was approved in the upper house at 2:51 AM on Wednesday. The laws were drafted in response to a mass shooting that occurred on December 14th at Bondi beach in Sydney, where two gunmen killed 15 people at a Hanukah event. The changes have drawn criticism from both progressive and conservative groups. The bill includes amendments to multiple pieces of legislation.
