Mafia boss behind notorious murders in Italy dies behind bars in Milan

Notorious Sicilian Mafia boss Benedetto "Nitto" Santapaola, responsible for numerous killings and attacks, died in a Milan prison hospital at age 87 after a long illness. Santapaola, known as "the hunter," rose to power in Catania in the 1970s and was arrested in 1993 after years on the run. He was serving multiple life sentences under Italy's strict 41bis regime, designed to isolate mafia leaders. Santapaola was convicted of ordering the 1984 murder of journalist Pippo Fava and was implicated in the 1992 car bombing that killed anti-mafia judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife, and three police officers. He was also convicted in the murder of judge Paolo Borsellino and his bodyguards.

Arrested in 1993 after over a decade on the run, Santapaola maintained his innocence and refused to collaborate with authorities, allegedly continuing to run his clan from prison. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death.
