What is the Society of St Pius X? Why Pope Leo excommunicated its members
The Vatican has declared the Society of St Pius X (SSPX) to be in schism with the Catholic Church following the unauthorized consecration of four bishops by the traditionalist group. This act, which occurred on Wednesday in Econe, Switzerland, defied Pope Leo XIV's explicit warning against proceeding without papal approval. The Vatican's doctrinal office stated that the involved bishops, along with knowingly adhering priests and lay members, have been excommunicated and are no longer recognized as Church members. The SSPX, founded in opposition to reforms from the Second Vatican Council, views these consecrations as a necessary defense of traditional Catholic faith. The dispute stems from the SSPX's rejection of Vatican II's modernizing changes, such as the allowance of Mass in local languages.
