Tens of thousands of far-left protesters clash with police in anti-conservative party riots
On Saturday, over 30,000 far-left protesters gathered in Erfurt, Germany, to demonstrate against the conservative Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Clashes with police occurred, with officers using batons and anti-riot ordnance. The protests coincided with the AfD's party conference, where leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla were re-elected. Protesters, organized by groups like "widersetzen," aimed to block the convention, accusing the AfD of pursuing fascist policies and mass deportations. AfD leadership criticized the protesters' methods as anti-democratic and disruptive. Despite the confrontations, police reported the demonstrations were "mostly peaceful" with around 100 law violations, primarily graffiti. The AfD, currently the second-largest parliamentary group, is experiencing a surge in popularity.
