Medicaid billing allowed to resume for Planned Parenthood after being cut off
Planned Parenthood and two other regional abortion providers can resume billing Medicaid for non-abortion services after a year-long cutoff. This defunding, mandated by a July 2025 Trump administration policy, has been linked to clinic closures and reduced screenings for cancer and STDs. The restored billing, effective Sunday, does not guarantee the return of all previously cut services. The policy has financially impacted providers, leading to nearly 30 Planned Parenthood clinic closures and a significant decrease in birth control and cancer screenings. While some affiliates are expanding services, others, like Maine Family Planning, are not reopening closed primary care clinics due to the difficulty of rebuilding and ongoing funding uncertainty. The political debate over defunding abortion providers continues, with abortion opponents advocating for renewed restrictions.
