UK-Switzerland deal to scrap roaming charges and allow Britons to use e-gates

The UK has signed a new services deal with Switzerland aimed at increasing exports by £5.2 billion annually in the long run. This agreement will allow Britons to use e-gates in Switzerland, mirroring Switzerland's citizens' existing ability to use e-gates in the UK. The deal is expected to make it easier for British firms to export their expertise to Switzerland, which is the UK's sixth-largest services export market. The agreement was announced as outgoing Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer emphasized its potential to create opportunities and support jobs. Separately, the UK's transport secretary discussed Europe's new EES border system with the European commissioner for sustainable transport and tourism, agreeing to work towards smoother checks for the summer travel period.

A £5.2 billion trade deal has been sealed between the UK and Switzerland, allowing British nationals to use e-gates at Swiss airports and border crossings from later this year, starting with Zurich. This agreement also eliminates mobile phone roaming charges and maintains existing trade terms for various goods including medicines, cars, and art. The deal aims to unlock an additional £5.2 billion annually in UK services exports to Switzerland, which is a significant market for the UK's financial and services sectors. Additionally, UK services professionals will benefit from visa-free travel for up to 90 days a year. The agreement also ensures continued pharmaceutical patent protections.
