Canada and Mexico tell US they want free trade deal renewed

Canada and Mexico have formally requested a 16-year renewal of the North American free trade agreement with the United States. This move aims to secure the pact, which has been questioned by US President Donald Trump. The agreement is crucial for both Canada and Mexico, as the US represents their primary trading partner and the destination for the majority of their exports, 75% and 80% respectively. Dominic LeBlanc, Canada's minister responsible for Canada-US trade, communicated this recommendation in a letter on Monday. The request underscores the importance of the trade deal for the economic stability of Canada and Mexico.

Canada has proposed renewing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) for 16 years and simultaneously initiating discussions on sectoral tariffs. Canadian Minister Dominic LeBlanc outlined these suggestions in a letter to the US and Mexico, ahead of a meeting with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. These trade discussions have been stalled since late last year. Canada also seeks to address US-imposed tariffs on steel, aluminum, and cars, which have impacted its economy. The USMCA review process, which must be completed by July 1, has seen criticism of Canada's pace compared to Mexico's engagement with the US administration.
