Typhoon Bavi weakens to tropical storm as it slams into eastern China

Tropical Storm Bavi, the strongest storm to hit China this year, made landfall in eastern China after weakening from a typhoon. The storm, approximately the size of France, brought heavy rains and strong winds to Zhejiang province and is expected to continue affecting eastern and northern China for days. Authorities evacuated nearly two million people ahead of the storm's arrival. The storm caused significant damage, including felling over 1,300 trees and flooding streets. China's transport network was heavily disrupted, with hundreds of flights cancelled and railway services suspended in cities like Hangzhou and Shanghai.

Typhoon Bavi made landfall in eastern China on Saturday night, becoming the second major storm to impact the country in a week. This resulted in the cancellation of over 2,800 flights by Chinese airlines, with Shanghai's Pudong and Hongqiao airports alone canceling more than 650 flights. Additionally, train services were suspended from some of the city's main stations. Over 2.4 million people were evacuated from areas in the storm's path. The typhoon first came ashore in Taizhou, Zhejiang, and made a second landfall in Wenzhou city.

China is bracing for Typhoon Bavi, the second typhoon to approach the country in a week. Hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated from eastern Zhejiang province, with the city of Wenzhou, home to approximately 10 million people, near the storm's projected landfall on Sunday morning. While Bavi has weakened to a Category 1 typhoon, it is expected to bring exceptionally heavy rains to eastern Zhejiang and northeastern Fujian provinces. The typhoon previously caused heavy rainfall in Taiwan and triggered landslides in the Philippines that killed 17 people. Authorities stated the evacuations are a precautionary measure against a worst-case scenario.

Typhoon Bavi, known as Inday in the Philippines, has intensified monsoon rains across the region, causing deadly landslides in the Philippines. Ten people died in a landslide in Malapatan, Sarangani province, and at least five others in Lanao del Sur. While the typhoon itself is not expected to make landfall in the Philippines, its tail end is bringing heavy rainfall and flooding to various areas, including Manila. The super typhoon previously caused infrastructure damage in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. Bavi is now moving towards Taiwan and China, with evacuations underway in Taiwan and expected heavy rain in northern and eastern Taiwan, parts of Japan, and eventually China.

Typhoon Bavi, a massive storm spanning 1,000 km, has already caused landslides in the southern Philippines, resulting in at least 15 deaths. The typhoon is now heading towards Taiwan and south-eastern China, with landfall expected in China on Saturday. Taiwan is preparing for significant rainfall, with authorities warning of up to 1 meter of precipitation, and has placed 29,000 soldiers on standby for relief efforts. This storm is anticipated to be the largest by size to hit Taiwan since 1987. Across the region, flights have been canceled, schools have suspended classes, and residents are stocking up on supplies in anticipation of the typhoon's impact.
