Suspected Somali pirates seize tanker near Yemen amid wave of hijackings
An oil tanker, the Asana, has been seized off the coast of Yemen, an incident attributed to Somali pirates by the country's coastguard. The hijacking occurred approximately 26 nautical miles off Hadramawt province on Friday, marking the latest in a significant resurgence of piracy in the Gulf of Aden. The UK's Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported an "illegal boarding" by "unauthorised personnel" 65 nautical miles south of Mukalla. The tanker is reportedly moving slowly southeast towards Somalia. Yemeni authorities are collaborating with international partners to monitor the vessel's condition and movements, with naval and aerial assets dispatched to the area. This event is part of a broader wave of hijackings re-emerging this year after a period of relative dormancy for Somali piracy.
