This potential intervention could delay the deal, which has already received approval from the US, China, and several other countries. The UK's antitrust regulator might review the transaction, recalling its previous blocking of Microsoft's Activision Blizzard acquisition. Nandy expressed concerns about the deal's potential impact on news, children's television, and streaming services within Britain. Companies involved have until July 6 to respond to the minister's concerns.

This mega-merger would create a media giant controlling significant assets, including Hollywood studios, Channel 5, CNN, TNT Sports, and streaming services like Paramount+ and HBO Max. Nandy intends to task Ofcom with assessing the impact on media plurality and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) with investigating competition issues. She is also considering new legislation to allow Ofcom to review the merger's effect on streaming services, which are not currently covered by existing law. Paramount has until July 6th to respond, and the company expressed confidence that the deal will clear UK scrutiny.
