Chinese national given one year in prison for smuggling ants out of Kenya

A Chinese national, Zhang Kequn, was sentenced to one year in prison and fined 1 million Kenyan shillings in Nairobi, Kenya, on Wednesday for attempting to smuggle over 2,000 live queen garden ants out of the country. Zhang was arrested at Nairobi's main airport while attempting to travel to China. He initially pleaded not guilty but later changed his plea. The Kenyan court cited a growing demand for the ants, prized by collectors in Europe and Asia, and the potential negative ecological impact as reasons for the stiff sentence. After serving his sentence, Zhang will be deported to China. His lawyer plans to appeal the sentence within 14 days.
