One anti-war critic fined, another held as Russia clamps down on opponents

Russian authorities are continuing to suppress domestic opposition. Blogger Ilya Remeslo has been remanded in custody for two months on suspicion of spreading false information against the military, following a public denouncement of President Putin. Separately, politician Boris Nadezhdin has been convicted of displaying extremist symbols, a ruling that prevents him from collecting signatures for upcoming parliamentary elections. Nadezhdin, who previously ran on an anti-war platform, was also declared a "foreign agent" and barred from leaving Russia. These actions occur as few genuine opposition figures remain in the country, with many having gone into exile and prominent critic Alexei Navalny having died in a penal colony.

Russian activist Ilya Remeslo was arrested on Friday. He faces charges of "spreading fakes on the Russian army," a violation of censorship laws implemented by Moscow after its troop deployment to Ukraine. This charge carries a potential maximum penalty of ten years in prison. Remeslo, previously known for targeting Kremlin opponents, had recently denounced President Vladimir Putin and the Ukraine offensive. His lawyer, Sergei Badamshin, stated that Remeslo was being transported to Moscow for court proceedings. The arrest occurred shortly after Remeslo reportedly predicted Putin's potential downfall.
