Trump reportedly tells Putin he is prepared to help end war in Ukraine

According to Russia's TASS news agency and a Putin adviser, Donald Trump spoke with Vladimir Putin on Sunday, stating that ending the war in Ukraine is critical and that he is prepared to help. During the approximately hour-long "friendly and frank" call, Trump also reportedly informed Putin that the US is nearing a peace deal with Iran. Putin also extended birthday wishes to Trump. Trump officials have recently expressed a desire for the war in Ukraine to conclude quickly.

On Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky both spoke with US President Donald Trump via phone. The calls occurred as Trump celebrated his 80th birthday and the conflict in Ukraine remained a significant issue ahead of the G7 summit. Putin's call with Trump lasted nearly an hour. During discussions about Ukraine, Trump stressed the importance of ending hostilities. He also indicated his willingness to encourage European allies and Kyiv to achieve this objective, including at the upcoming G7 summit.

According to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, the discussion was "frank and businesslike" and covered the Middle East and Ukraine. Trump described the conversation as "good" and stated he has known Putin for a long time. During the call, Trump reportedly suggested a "little bit of a ceasefire" in Ukraine. The call took place while Trump was meeting with astronauts from the Artemis II mission in the Oval Office.
