Cuban dissident Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara goes into exile in US
Cuban dissident Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara has gone into exile in the US. He was arrested in 2021 during anti-government protests and subsequently imprisoned for five years. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Otero Alcántara's imprisonment was due to his activism and artistic expression demanding basic freedoms for Cubans. His case, along with that of fellow SIM member Maykel Castillo, has been a diplomatic point of contention between Washington and Havana. Recent US actions against Cuba include an oil blockade, sanctions, and an indictment against former leader Raúl Castro. These measures have worsened Cuba's fuel crisis, leading to blackouts and food shortages, and have significantly impacted tourism.
