EU officially launches Ukraine and Moldova accession process

The European Union has officially launched the accession process for Ukraine and Moldova. This formal launch, which occurred on Monday, signifies the beginning of a complex process requiring both countries to commit to years of political reforms. Ukraine views EU membership as a crucial security guarantee and an anchor for its alignment with Western values, especially as it continues to defend against Russia's invasion. Deputy Prime Minister Taras Kachka attended an intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg to open talks on aligning Kyiv with the EU's laws, standards, and values. Despite concerns within the EU regarding Ukraine's readiness and security implications due to the ongoing conflict, the accession process has moved forward.

Ukraine and Moldova have begun the first phase of EU membership negotiations in Luxembourg. This significant step, launched by senior EU officials and ministers from both countries, symbolizes their progress towards joining the bloc. The negotiations were previously blocked by Hungary but were enabled by the election of a new Hungarian government. The initial phase, covering rule of law and democracy, opens the door to discussions on other policy areas. EU leaders praised the determination of Ukraine and Moldova in advancing reforms despite challenges. While Ukraine has made progress, officials note that 10 priority reforms agreed last December are not yet fully completed.

European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that all member states agreed to open the first accession negotiations cluster, recognizing the determination and reforms of both nations. This enlargement is described as a strategic choice for a larger European Union.
