Wave of child abuse cases shakes schools in Paris

A wave of child abuse cases is impacting Paris schools, with a recent trial of a school assistant accused of sexual mistreatment highlighting the issue. Paris police are investigating over 100 allegations of mistreatment, violence, and sexual assault against school monitors in state nursery and primary schools. These accusations, involving children as young as three, occurred during lunch breaks, nap times, and after-school activities. Investigations are underway in 84 preschools, approximately 20 primary schools, and 10 daycare centers across France. Parents' groups have stated they fought for years for these allegations to be taken seriously, citing failures in the recruitment and vetting of monitors. Paris mayor Emmanuel Grégoire has launched a €20 million plan to address systemic issues within the school monitor system, including suspending 78 monitors suspected of abuse.
