Qatar denies capturing three Iranian pilots after downing fighter jets

Qatar has denied Iran's claims that it is detaining three Iranian bomber pilots. Iran stated that the pilots were captured alive in March after their aircraft crashed following an unauthorized breach of Qatari airspace. According to Iran, the pilots have been held incommunicado for six months. Qatar's Foreign Ministry expressed surprise at these "misleading statements" and reaffirmed that Qatari forces are not holding any surviving aircrew. Doha confirmed that Qatari forces engaged the aircraft after warnings were ignored and that search and rescue teams recovered the remains of one pilot, whose body was repatriated to Iran.

Iran has called on Qatar to release three of its pilots who have allegedly been held captive for six months. Iranian authorities revealed on Saturday that these pilots were captured alive by Qatari forces after their Su-24 fighter jets crashed during an unspecified "Middle East war" in March. Iran had previously reported one pilot killed and others missing following a sortie to Qatar. General Mohammad Bagherzadeh of the Iranian armed forces stated that the pilots, identified as Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian, and Omran Behraveshian, have not been allowed to contact their families. He made this appeal in a letter to the International Committee of the Red Cross. Qatar has denied detaining any Iranian pilots.

Iran claims Qatar is holding three of its pilots captive for six months, alleging they were captured after their fighter jets were downed by Qatari air defenses during a military operation on March 2, 2026, at the start of the US-Iran war. Iran also reported the return of a fourth pilot's body from the same incident.
