National Rail acknowledges ‘exceptional challenges’ of extreme heat after second train derailment in 24 hours
Network Rail has acknowledged "exceptional challenges" to the railway system due to the UK's fifth summer heatwave, following two train derailments within 24 hours. On Friday, the rear carriages of a Greater Anglia train derailed upright at Wickford station in Essex, with no reported injuries. The previous day, two people were seriously injured when several Southern train carriages derailed on their side near Lewes in East Sussex. Network Rail is conducting internal investigations into the causes of both incidents, while the Rail Accident Investigation Branch has deployed inspectors. The extreme heat has led to proactive measures like monitoring track temperatures and implementing speed restrictions. Disruption is expected across the network, with passengers advised to allow extra travel time.
