Preservation group urges Supreme Court to suspend Trump’s White House ballroom project
A historic preservation group, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to suspend construction of President Trump's White House ballroom project. This request follows the Trump administration's plea to the Supreme Court to allow the $400 million project to continue during an appeal. The Trust argues the administration is trying to bypass judicial review and congressional permission for the demolition of the East Wing and construction of the 90,000-square-foot ballroom. A divided appeals court had previously upheld an order to pause aboveground construction, a ruling that was suspended for the administration's appeal. The administration contends the president has unimpeded authority to renovate the White House and that the project, including an underground military facility, is vital for national security.
