Zambia opposition leader to challenge Hichilema election victory in court
Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile plans to challenge President Hakainde Hichilema's election victory in court. Mundubile alleges "serious irregularities, inconsistencies and circumstances" surrounding the vote count and declaration, which resulted in Hichilema securing a second term. While the election was largely peaceful, the opposition reported intimidation and restrictions during their campaign. The electoral commission declared Hichilema the winner with approximately 60 percent of the vote. Tensions rose after polls closed, with authorities arresting opposition figures and the electoral commission temporarily suspending vote counting due to reports of violence and ballot theft. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed concern over the arrests.
