US sanctions International Criminal Court president and trial lawyer
The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on the President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Tomoko Akane, and Senior Trial Lawyer Abdoulaye Seye. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated these sanctions are part of a campaign to "dismantle" the court, which the administration views as a threat to US national sovereignty. The sanctions freeze any US assets held by Akane and Seye and prohibit US entities from transacting with them. The US has previously sanctioned numerous ICC judges and prosecutors, citing the court's investigations into actions by the US and its ally, Israel, as overstepping its authority. The ICC has denounced these actions as an erosion of the rule of law and a threat to judicial independence.
