Panama Canal to cut number of ships passing through due to El Niño

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) will reduce the number of ships transiting the waterway from 36 to 32 per day starting September 15th. This decision is due to low rainfall caused by El Niño, a weather pattern exacerbated by climate change. The ACP is implementing these measures to maintain service reliability and protect water resources for human consumption. The new restrictions will be phased in from September 3rd. This reduction comes as the shipping industry is already facing disruptions from the Iran war impacting the Strait of Hormuz. The Panama Canal is a vital route for interoceanic travel, significantly shortening journeys between the Atlantic and Pacific.

The Panama Canal Authority will limit daily vessel transits starting September 4 due to anticipated lower water levels caused by the El Nino weather phenomenon. Initially, 34 ships will be permitted daily, with a further reduction to 32 ships beginning September 15. This decision reverses previous assurances of no transit limits this year. The canal, which normally accommodates about 40 vessels daily and handles approximately 5 percent of global maritime trade, is implementing these restrictions to address concerns about drier weather conditions. Reduced traffic through the canal could lead to slower international shipping and increased costs for industries reliant on the waterway.
