Bali jails Swiss tourist for insulting sacred Day of Silence
A 26-year-old Swiss tourist, Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, has been sentenced to one year in prison in Bali, Indonesia, for insulting the sacred Hindu holiday of Nyepi, also known as the Day of Silence. Zgraggen filmed himself walking on an empty beach and posted a video on Instagram with expletives during the holiday, which fell on March 19th. This action sparked widespread anger among Balinese on social media, leading to his arrest in March. Nyepi is a day of strict restrictions on Bali, where the island observes silence, the airport closes, and internet access is cut, with all residents and tourists expected to comply.
