ICE detains captain of New York boat that capsized and led to death of mother and daughter
The captain of a boat that capsized near the Statue of Liberty on August 8th, resulting in the deaths of Sara Sanchez and her infant daughter Antonella, has been taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Manuel Ernesto Hernandez-Umana, 46, faces state charges of misconduct and neglect of a ship officer resulting in death. The Department of Homeland Security stated that Hernandez is in the U.S. illegally, having lied to border patrol upon entering in 2007. ICE intends to deport him after he faces criminal charges.
