India’s missile tech transfer to firms signals defence self-reliance on track

India's Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the transfer of conventional missile system technologies from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to Indian private defence companies for domestic production. This move aims to reduce India's reliance on imported defense equipment and enhance its export capabilities and deterrence against Pakistan and China. However, analysts suggest that achieving full self-reliance in defense manufacturing remains a long-term objective. This is due to the missile supply chain's significant dependence on imported components and the need for private firms to demonstrate their ability to produce complex weapons.

India's Ministry of Defence has approved the transfer of technology for all conventional missile systems developed by the state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to the Indian private sector for domestic production. This policy shift, announced on Tuesday, aims to accelerate the mass production of missiles, boost domestic manufacturing, and reduce reliance on imports. Previously, state-owned firms held a monopoly on missile production. The move allows private companies to compete for technology and production rights, subject to regulatory requirements. This initiative supports India's goal of military self-sufficiency, known as Atmanirbhar Bharat, and is influenced by recent geopolitical events and conflicts.
