Russia cements its role as Africa junta protector after helping quell Niger’s mutiny

Russia's Africa Corps paramilitary group intervened to quell a mutiny by renegade soldiers in Niger's capital, Niamey, over the weekend, helping to subdue the rebels and secure the ruling junta. This intervention, requested by Niger, marks the second time this year Russian forces have supported junta-led regimes in the Sahel region, following a similar action in Mali against jihadis. Analysts suggest Russia's primary goal is to sustain these regimes, with counter-terrorism efforts being a secondary priority. This partnership solidifies Russia's role as a protector of African juntas that have turned away from Western allies. Despite these interventions, the security situation in the Sahel continues to worsen, with armed groups increasingly targeting urban centers.

Niger's authorities reported thwarting an attempted coup early Saturday morning, with soldiers attacking Air Base 101, which hosts Nigerien military aircraft, drones, and a counter-terrorism unit. Russian and Italian forces are also stationed at the base. The number of soldiers involved and casualties were not disclosed, and Niger's military ruler, Gen. Tiani, has not publicly commented. State broadcaster footage showed alleged mutineers being arrested by the Presidential Guard. Commercial activity has since returned to normal, and government supporters gathered in Niamey. Niger, along with Mali and Burkina Faso, are military-ruled nations that have strengthened cooperation with Russia and cut ties with Western partners.
