At least 12 dead as wildfires sweep through northern Algeria
At least 12 people have died and dozens have been injured as wildfires spread across northern Algeria. Civil protection authorities reported numerous blazes affecting several provinces along the country's northern coast. The fatalities occurred amidst a severe heatwave impacting northern Africa, with Algeria and Tunisia particularly affected. The Interior Minister confirmed five deaths in Jijel province, four in Bejaia, and three in Tizi Ouzou, with at least 54 individuals suffering burn injuries, six of whom are in intensive care. Government officials stated the Health Minister and Interior Minister traveled to Bejaia to assess firefighting and evacuation efforts, and many homes in Bejaia and Jijel have been evacuated.
