Lake Mead plummets to historic low water level as Colorado River struggles

Lake Mead, the largest U.S. reservoir, has reached a historic low water level, dipping below its previous record set in 2022. This critical reservoir on the Colorado River, which supplies water to approximately 40 million people across seven states, tribal nations, and Mexico, is struggling due to prolonged drought, extreme heat, overuse, and reduced snowmelt. Lake Powell, the second-largest reservoir on the Colorado River, is also at historic lows. Federal officials are implementing a short-term proposal to reduce water use by Lower Basin states, as a long-term agreement among states has not been reached. Experts warn these measures may not be sufficient to address the ongoing crisis impacting millions and the region's ability to produce hydropower.

Federal officials are also withholding cool water releases from Lake Powell to protect a threatened native fish.
