A fire at a nursing home in Sri Lanka kills 12 people
A fire at an unregistered nursing home in Anguruwatota, western Sri Lanka, resulted in the deaths of 12 residents and injured eight others. The blaze began late Wednesday night, and 51 residents were rescued. The facility, which also housed individuals with mental illnesses, was overcrowded and had been warned about regulations. The director of the home has been arrested on suspicion of causing deaths through negligence and is being detained for a week pending investigation. Government officials had previously visited the institution and instructed management to comply with laws.
