Nigeria’s football federation chief resigns amid corruption allegations

Ibrahim Musa Gusau has resigned as president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) amidst corruption allegations and poor national team performance. His resignation, announced on Thursday, was followed by President Bola Tinubu's office stating that the president has ordered a "comprehensive reform" of the country's football administration. The NFF is reportedly under investigation by Nigeria's secret police for the alleged misuse of 17 billion naira ($12.7 million) received from the government. Gusau also advised other board members to resign. President Tinubu's statement emphasized the need to strengthen governance, administration, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions, and accountability within Nigerian football.

The federation's general secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, has also resigned. Gusau, who assumed the presidency in 2022, cited consultations with stakeholders and family for his decision. This resignation comes after the men's team, the Super Eagles, missed the World Cup and the women's team, the Super Falcons, failed to qualify for the 2027 Women's World Cup, marking their first absence since the tournament's inception in 1991. The federation had initiated a fact-finding committee to investigate these poor performances.
