Malaysia to return 1,500 Rohingya refugees next month, despite safety fears

Malaysia plans to repatriate at least 1,500 Rohingya refugees to Myanmar on September 29 as part of a voluntary repatriation program. This initiative, agreed upon with Myanmar's government, aims to return 5,000 Rohingya individuals. The repatriation will utilize Myanmar naval and hospital ships. The Malaysian government stated it will not proceed if refugees' lives are at risk, but Human Rights Watch has raised concerns about safety and ongoing human rights abuses in Myanmar, questioning the conditions for a safe return. Malaysia is also processing over 4,000 individuals through a Refugee Registration Document program.

Over 95% of refugees in Malaysia are from Myanmar. Rights groups have expressed concerns about the new system, fearing increased surveillance and a lack of adequate safeguards.
