The victims were mostly farmers working in open fields and labourers caught in exposed areas, according to local authorities. Several other people were injured and taken to nearby hospitals, with some in critical condition. The deaths occurred during a period of heavy rain and intense lightning, which is common during this time of year in Bangladesh. The country has declared lightning strikes a natural disaster since 2016, highlighting the severity of the issue.
