Spain immigration scheme sees 1.2 million apply for legal status

Spain's immigration scheme, launched in April by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, has received nearly 1.2 million applications from undocumented migrants seeking legal status by June 30. This initiative contrasts with a broader European trend of stricter immigration policies. Latin Americans constituted the largest group of applicants, making up 67 percent of the total, with Colombians alone representing 25.9 percent. African nationalities followed at 22.9 percent. The majority of applicants were under 45 years old, with males slightly outnumbering females. Successful applicants must demonstrate a clean criminal record and prior residency in Spain. The government aims to process these applications, which could benefit sectors like construction needing more workers.
