Parts of UK at ‘exceptional’ risk of wildfires as heatwave goes on

Experts have warned that parts of the United Kingdom are facing an "exceptional" risk of wildfires due to the ongoing heatwave. Natural England's fire severity index indicates that southern England and the Midlands are currently at the highest risk. This area of "exceptional" risk is projected to expand to the South East and east of England by mid-week, while most of the rest of England and Wales are at "very high" risk. The Met Office forecasts that these hot, dry, and sunny conditions will persist into the coming week. The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) has stated that these conditions significantly increase wildfire risk, with most wildfires being ignited by a spark.

England and Wales will continue to experience heatwave conditions with temperatures exceeding 30C into next week, according to the Met Office. This prolonged hot weather has led to warnings of extreme wildfire risk, with the London fire brigade urging against disposable barbecues. The UK Health Security Agency has issued amber heat health alerts for the West Midlands and South West, and yellow alerts for other regions, indicating potential significant impacts on health and social care services, including increased deaths. Water firms have implemented hosepipe bans in several areas due to strain on supplies. The Met Office also advises caution regarding high UV levels and potential cold water shock for those near bodies of water.
