Syrian parliament convenes for first time following al-Assad’s overthrow

Syria's newly appointed transitional parliament convened for its inaugural session in Damascus on Sunday, following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad. President Ahmed al-Sharaa urged lawmakers to prioritize the national interest and foster dialogue, the rule of law, and respect for institutions. The parliament's primary role will be to draft a new constitution and establish democratic foundations after decades of authoritarian rule and civil war. Al-Sharaa emphasized that improving the economy, strengthening public services, and attracting international investment are key priorities for the nation, which faces a dire economic state. The People's Assembly consists of 210 seats, with two-thirds elected and the remainder appointed by President al-Sharaa.

Syria's transitional parliament convened its first session on Sunday, tasked with drafting a new constitution and establishing democracy following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. The previous legislature was dissolved, and a temporary constitutional declaration was adopted for a five-year transition. Two-thirds of the 210 parliament members were selected by local committees appointed by the electoral commission, which was itself appointed by President Ahmed al-Sharaa. President al-Sharaa will appoint the remaining members this week. The session began with 206 members present, with the Sweida province yet to fully designate its representatives due to sectarian violence, though al-Sharaa appointed two from the region.
