More than 112,000 displaced by Yemen fighting; thousands flee to Djibouti

Intensifying conflict in Yemen has displaced over 112,000 people, primarily along the west coast and in Taiz and Lahj provinces, according to the United Nations. This surge in displacement occurred as Iran-allied Houthis advanced, seizing control of the Red Sea coast and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. Approximately 3,000 Yemenis have fled the fighting by boat to Djibouti. The UN estimates that 22 million Yemenis, nearly half the population, urgently require humanitarian aid, with resources already severely limited. The crisis also threatens over 65,000 registered refugees and asylum seekers in Yemen.

Yemen's anti-Houthi forces are conducting an inquest into a sudden military collapse along the west coast, which resulted in the defeat of over 15 brigades and the loss of the entire region to Houthi control. This rout, which occurred around September 10th, has raised questions about coordination, morale, and readiness among the UN-recognized Yemeni government's forces. Some Yemeni politicians allege that billions of dollars were offered to persuade forces to abandon their positions, though the source of these alleged payments is not identified. Efforts are now underway to reorganize these forces to capture the strategic Kahbob mountains. The National Resistance Forces, led by Tareq Saleh, stated they made a tactical retreat to prevent encirclement, while others describe the withdrawal as a betrayal. The Houthis have become a more sophisticated military force, utilizing drones and developing indigenous weapon-making capabilities.
