Labor’s plans for visa overstayer detention centres branded a ‘Donald Trump twist’ on immigration

The Australian federal government plans to reopen detention centers for visa overstayers as part of a strategy to reduce the number of unlawful non-citizens. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke stated this is a return to a routine process existing before 2015, involving compliance officers and temporary detention for those awaiting departure. However, Greens Senator David Shoebridge criticized the policy, comparing it to Donald Trump's immigration crackdown and the US ICE agency, citing concerns about the private company managing detention facilities. Burke dismissed these comparisons as "ridiculous claims," emphasizing the policy's limited scope and duration. Advocates expressed concern that the plan could increase Australia's detention capacity and endanger asylum seekers' rights.

Australia is implementing a crackdown on immigration violations, with Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announcing that the Australian Border Force will detain visa overstayers. Approximately 77,000 individuals are currently in Australia without a valid visa and will face detention or be encouraged to depart. This policy aims to reintroduce consequences for overstaying, a process that was routine before 2015. The government is also expanding its compliance team by 100 officers and creating 250 new detention beds. Additionally, Australia will clamp down on "visa hopping" by introducing a "No Further Stay" provision for tourist visas and requiring international students to advance their qualifications for new study visas.
