Burkina Faso severs diplomatic ties with France
Burkina Faso has severed diplomatic ties with France, citing a lack of mutual respect and accusing the former colonial power of undermining its national interests. The West African nation's junta government alleges French support for "subversive networks" and an intent to marginalize Burkina Faso internationally. This decision follows earlier actions by the junta, including the expulsion of French troops and diplomats, and a pivot towards China and Russia. The statement emphasizes that the severed ties concern only the institutional framework and not the historical or cultural bonds between the two peoples. Burkina Faso, along with Mali and Niger, also recently withdrew from the regional bloc Ecowas to form the Alliance of the Sahel States.
