Methanol-tainted Nigeria drink kills 48, 182 made ill: government

In Nigeria's southwestern Ondo state, 48 people have died and 182 have fallen ill in recent weeks due to consuming alcoholic concoctions tainted with methanol. The locally brewed mixture, known locally as "Monkey Tail," caused deaths through organ failure and blindness. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) reported that five individuals have been rendered totally blind and two have partially lost their sight. Authorities have arrested 15 people in connection with the production and sale of the contaminated drink. The first cases of poisoning were reported earlier this month, with the toll gradually increasing.

In response, Nigeria's National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has enforced a nationwide ban on alcohol sold in sachets and small plastic containers.
