New data shows record number of arrests and deportations of immigrants in the US

Newly released government data indicates the Trump administration arrested and deported a record number of immigrants in July, apprehending an average of 1,500 and removing 1,100 daily. This surge in enforcement, totaling 49,571 arrests and nearly 34,000 removals in July, represents the highest numbers since October 2022 and the start of the second Trump administration, respectively. Notably, a record 51% of those arrested in July had no prior criminal history. The administration is reportedly increasing operations through less visible methods, such as at ICE appointments, traffic stops, and airports, rather than high-profile raids. This trend is occurring amidst increased funding for DHS and the expansion of programs like 287(g), which deputizes local law enforcement for immigration enforcement.

In July, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested over 49,500 individuals, marking the highest monthly total since President Trump began his second term. This figure represents a roughly 15 percent increase from June and a significant 70 percent rise compared to February's numbers. The surge in arrests follows a period of stagnation after a decline in February, which occurred after protests and criticism. Nearly 20,000 of these July arrests took place in Texas and Florida, states with 287(g) agreements that enhance local law enforcement's role in immigration enforcement. This expanded campaign coincides with ICE's hiring of approximately 12,000 additional officers and agents last year.
